CareerPlug vs Indeed: a system versus a faucet

People search this comparison constantly, but CareerPlug and Indeed are not substitutes. Indeed is a job board: it produces applications. CareerPlug is an applicant tracking system: it manages what happens after, and one of the places it posts your jobs is Indeed. The real question is whether you need a faucet, a sink, or someone to do the dishes.
What each one costs
Indeed: free posts exist with limited visibility. Sponsored budgets start as low as $5 per day per posting, and industry pricing guides put typical small business spend at $150 to $300 per month for one or two active roles. Indeed's own material says sponsored posts lead to a hire about 5 days faster than free posts.
CareerPlug: no public pricing page (their /pricing URL 404s as of August 2026). SelectHub reports a starting price of $50 per location per month. That fee is on top of, not instead of, whatever you spend on job boards. One CareerPlug customer testimonial describes replacing '$495 a month on a major job board' and getting more candidates in the first month.
When each one wins
- Indeed alone wins when you hire rarely, one role at a time, and you have someone who will personally respond to every applicant fast. The reach is unmatched for hourly roles.
- CareerPlug wins when applications are arriving faster than you can track in a spreadsheet: it centralizes applicants from Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Facebook and your careers page, adds pipelines and scheduling, and its reviews are strong (4.7 on Software Advice, 93% recommend).
- Neither wins the minutes that matter. A common critique of Indeed is that it is good at producing applications but does nothing to tell you which ones are worth a call. An ATS organizes the pile, but somebody still has to text every applicant within minutes, screen them consistently, and book interviews. In hourly hiring that gap is where candidates are lost.
